It is common knowledge that the moon affects the movement of the tides but being mostly water ourselves, we too are influenced by this lunar cycle.
Wiccans and Druids believe that each phase of the moon brings with it special energies which may be utilized to increase the potency of spells and other ritual magick performed.
New Moon
With the Sun, Moon and Earth almost in a straight line, the Moon appears to be very dark in the night sky.
The New Moon is a time for new beginnings and fresh starts. It it a great time to ritually cleanse new tools and other objects used in ceremonies. It is also the time to embark on new ventures as a new job, relationship or even to move house.
First Quarter Moon
The right half of the Moon is illuminated and the left side of the Moon appears dark. The First Quarter Moon will continue to grow until the Full Moon.
For this period, attain spiritual growth and become more aware of your inner self. Use this time to pamper yourself and use it for attraction magick such as love spells and healing.
Full Moon
During the Full Moon the surface of the moon is at its brightest due to the sun light reflecting off it.
For a few days prior to and on the the full moon, moon magick is used for performing acts of divination (predicting the future via tarot, runes, I Ching, crystal ball etc).
Waining Moon
During the time of the Waining moon (time after the full moon and prior the new moon,) it is the perfect time for letting go of past upheavals and to look more positively to the future. Unwanted habits and other negative influences in your life should be cast away this time. Some 'bad habits' such as smoking or over indulging on junk foods can be extremely hard to break so set a realistic time stages such as this time cut down by a quarter, then every month re-asses and cut back even more until your overal goal has been achieved. And don't be too hard on your self if you should happen to 'slip up' one day, as these things will happen, just let it be and carry on, don't let it be an excuse to give up!
The Lunar eclipse
A Lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes into the Earth's shadow and is an awl inspiring and wonderful sight to behold. It doesn't happen that often and it may only last for a few hours but that's plenty of time to partake in magick of all types. With forethought and organization, when the darkness falls, you could work with others till your hearts content, and to honor the Goddess in ritual or give thanks for all the wonders and bounty she provides.
