Throughout the world there are many variations between numerological systems past down through the generations and many of them have evolved in symbolic representation when written down. It is unclear when numbers were first used for divination purposes but it is widely believed to have begun with the Ancient Greeks, in particular the great mathematician ‘Pythagoras’. He believed that the whole universe was mathematically ordered and that everything could be expressed through numbers. In nature he found many numerological patterns and was the first to prove the geometry theorem of the right angled triangle for which he is most famously known (the Pythagoras theorem). Little is known about his early life but it is known that he traveled extensively though out Southern Europe including the Middle East, Africa ant Egypt where he is believed to have studied for some time. He later established a school in Italy teaching music, Astronomy and Mathematics. His school was burned to the ground and he was murdered. People just did not understand his ideas and so deemed him dangerous, a trait that has been echoed though out time. Some of his pupils (most commonly termed as Pythagoreans) are said to have continued his life’s work and passed their knowledge down through the centuries.

Today we are more concerned with the primary numbers 1 through 9 which relate to the personality, allowing the character of an individual to be calculated. Each planet and day of the week are associated with a planet and said to be lucky for those whose birth number is linked to it.

All numbers can be reduced to its primary by a simple process of simple addition. For example 72 becomes 7 + 2 = 9, 9 being the primary number. Similarly this process can be applied to dates along with further reductions applied for instance

2 nd May 1980 becomes 2 + 5 (the 5th month) + 1 + 9 + 8 + 0 =25

25 becomes 2+5= 7. 7 is the primary number of this date. This simple process can also be applied to the names of people, places and events, using a system of letter to number substitution

Secondary Numbers

The importance of the primary numbers is shared amongst all numerologists but some of them also offer meanings for the secondary numbers of 10 and above, also arrived by the process of left to right addition. And some of the secondary numbers in particular 11, 22 and 33 are said to be of spiritually empowering influence.

The Greeks and Hebrews believed the number 10 to be of great significance as the number returns the value of 1. Today the number ten often indicates great swings of emotion and activity. Houses of the number ten tend to have many arguments and mood swings amongst its occupants.
